One of the world's greatest monuments to medieval warfare, the Citadel is one of Cairo's main attractions and probably the most popular non-pharaonic monument in the Egyptian capital.

Modelled on classic Ottoman lines, with domes upon domes upon domes, this alabaster-white mosque within the Citadel took 18 years to build (1830–48).

It is the largest open museum of Islamic antiquities in the world. When you reach it, you will enter through the gates of the great Fatimid fortress and you will see huge gates and a long street with the largest mosques in Egypt, which were built in different Islamic artistic styles, including Fatimid, Ottoman, and Mamluk, such as Al-Hakim Mosque, Al-Aqmar Mosque, Al-Zahir Barquq Mosque, etc. You will see integrated religious complexes such as huge buildings containing a school, a mosque, a hospital for the treatment of people, and the tomb of the complex's owner. You will also see houses built in the Islamic eras with different styles, as well as schools and fountains (Sabil) providing drinking water for passers-by and animals for free.

Is the finest building of Cairo's Fatimid era and one of the city's earliest surviving mosques, completed in AD 972. It's also one of the world's oldest universities. Today, Al-Azhar University is still the leading theological center of the Islamic world. Located in the heart of the Islamic Cairo district.
